Surgery: Site Visit Summary

These site visits were very helpful and just like the rotation itself, extremely worthwhile. At this point, I’ve noticed a definite change in my H&Ps. When writing them, they feel more focused and I feel like I understand more of why certain things were ordered, why certain components of the ROS or physical exam can reasonably be excluded, and what must be clarified or mentioned in the HPI, assessment, or plan. Both the in-person and written feedback I received on my 1st H&P was specific to my patient and plan, and they were helpful in that I could apply that feedback when I wrote my 2nd and 3rd. I also appreciated that we approached our pharmacology cards with not the intention of memorizing them, but with the intention of understanding why they would be clinically useful in our rotations and how their use could be explained to the patients for whom we are prescribing them.
